Cyborg Cosmonaut (06/03/09)
year 20XX.

A new Space Race to Mars and the gas giants' satellites is in place. To have a chance against powerful countries, such as the U.S, the European Union or China, that would otherwise reclaim those planets for their own, the rest of the world has been developing its own joint space program, under the United Nations, and essentially fostered by Japan, Brazil, Australia and a few other countries.

However, the UNSA (United Nations Space Agency) budget is quite low, compared to that of its competitors. So it has been decided to send only one cosmonaut at a time into space. After many months of selection among thousands of candidates, Maria Guo Eckener, an Argentinian engineer, has been chosen to be the first human to go on Mars.

In order to save energy, food and space, it has been decided she would undergo extreme body modification: she would have all limbs, most of the torso and many organs removed, with other parts of the body greatly reduced. The end result was that, while the heart and lungs, most of the digestive system and reproductive organs were kept intact and held safely in a slim modular cylinder, her neck and head were the only parts of her body left totally untouched. Thanks to the many cybernetic implants near her spine, she can control shipboard computers or robots.

However extreme it may sound, in the designers' eyes it was not really far from the handling of the first cosmonauts in the 1960's, who were more passengers than really controlling their spaceships. Besides, considering the numerous social experiments in communication deprivation that have been performed since then, the fact she can't go wild inside the ship is an advantage for this 18 month long solitary mission toward the red planet.

For more than a year, Maria has been training with her new shape, controlling the commands of her space capsule and the robots she'll be using to explore Mars' surface. Finally, her day had come, and she launched from Brazil, almost one year before the other space programs were ready to take the same step.

...

18 months later, she landed safely in the Pacific, off the Japanese coast. Her mission was a success, and more than 8 billion people were with her in spirit on the day she landed on Mars, almost 10 months before. She is now an international hero, and was awarded prizes and interviewed by media from all over the world. A few critics noted that as of yet no human had technically put foot on Mars though...

She is now taking a one-year break, back home with her boyfriend that waited for her the whole time. After this, she has volunteered for the next destination of the UNSA program: exploring Titan, Saturn's satellite.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know, this is only a story: I guess there is many objections people would tell me, but i really wanted to give that pic a nice story for once.

I guess it would have been less shocking for people to have an already crippled body rather than someone with a normal one. But I do like the idea of motivated sacrifice, so that's how are things.

I got many questions, so I'll try to answer them:

-During most of the travel, she was sleeping: her biological rythm has been slowed down by meds and life support. so she actually felt the travel to Mars was half-shorter.
- She weights around 30kg. Since she has almost no fat tissues anymore in her body, she can eat at will, she'll barely get any fat.
- She still has her genitals, but has been made sterile in order to prevent hormonal deregulation. She can still have babies, as some of her ova have been frozen beforehand.
- Her genitals are at the bottom of her containment unit, hided by a hermetic access panel (since she is supposed to be able go out in space with a helmet and her current body). When pluged into her command slot, her wastes are directly taken care of and her pee recycled into drinkable water.
- Having sexual parts is also a good way for her to get stimulated in a "boring" environment such as her spaceship, without any external stimulus. When plugged into her command slot, she can control a dildo at will (it is said she asked engineers to add different models before hand).
